Ginrich's Devotional Blog

Ro 16:1-2 I commend c to you our sister Phoebe, a servant of the church in Cenchrea. I ask you to receive her in the Lord  in a way worthy of the saints f and to give her any help she may need from you, for she has been a great help to many people, including me.

What a commendation from such a leader as Paul. Many times the messenger was introduced in the document he or she was delivering. Since this is from Romans, it is quite possible Phoebe was delivering that wonderful epistle to the church in Rome. Phoebe was a deaconess in the church. The requirement of a deacon is found in 1 Timothy starting with verse 8. Even though it talks about men as deacons and the requirements of their wives, it is apparent that women also served and Paul praised this woman highly. Church is not a spectator sport. When we join the family of God, we are expected to be active. When we join a church we pledge to serve it with our prayers, our finances and our time. Are you one of those who says yes to the needs of your church or do you sit and wait (and maybe criticize) for others to serve? God not only created us for fellowship, Jesus said for us to serve our fellowman. Serving starts in our family, our church is our God family, and reaches out from there. No task is too small or too great for a child of God to do. Taking an active part grows faith and endears relationships.
