Follow As Sheep

Jn 10:14 “I am the good shepherd.  I know my sheep and my sheep know me—

It is hard for us to relate to sheep and shepherds.  Most of us don’t know much about them.  Sheep are very dumb animals.  But they do know their shepherd.  Everything else they will either freeze in fear or run.  They have learned their shepherd so well that the trust his leading and will follow him anywhere when he calls to them and leads them.  However, we, as sheep, have all gone astray.  We seldom listen for the voice of our Shepherd.  Many of us don’t even know His voice from any of the voices around us.  Sometimes we even confuse our own voices for His.  When we do recognize His voice, we think we have the right to question what He says, “Do you really mean that, Lord?  Is that really right, Lord?”  Our questioning can go on and on.  We also tend to delay following where He leads us with statements like, “I’m too busy for that now, Lord.”  I need or want to do this first.”  “Not now, Lord.”  I think you get the idea.  Our problem is, we don’t really love Him more than our selfish selves.  He laid down His life for us but we don’t want to be inconvenienced for Him.  It is our loss, not His, that we don’t follow.  We are the ones who are missing out on blessings.  We turn our eyes only to the inconveniences or difficulties rather than the One Who is able to give us the wisdom and strength to walk through any circumstance and come out victorious with Him.  Let us ask Him to help us to love Him passionately and completely.  Let us know deceive ourselves on how much we really love Him.  Until we recognize our lack we cannot grow.
