First Sin

Ge 3:6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.

Eve looked at something with her eyes and saw it looked good.  It was “advertised” (by Satan) to be able to give her wisdom if she would eat it.  Advertising has not changed.  The entire object of advertising is to convince us that what we are seeing or hearing about will be good for us or lead us to some objective.  Eve knew that this one fruit was forbidden by God to eat.  Eve’s eyes were on self-gratification rather than on God.  We have not changed.  It is by the desire for self-gratification through food that sin entered mankind.  We continue in it.  Food is not the only thing that produces self-gratification.  Some look for it through drugs, alcohol, smoking, money, power, fame and many other ways.  Part of self-control, one of the fruits of the Holy Sprit, is knowing the difference between what God says in the Bible is good for us and what our physical eyes and the world would say.  It is so important to our Christian walk to study God’s Word and make them a part of our daily lives.  We have become so soft.  We cannot stand a moment of discomfort.  We desire a life of ease, sometimes at the cost of our relationship with the One Who loves us most and knows us best.  He gave the ultimate sacrifice so we would not have to pay our debt.  Thank You, God.
