A Cheerful Heart

Proverbs 17:22 A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.

Sometimes it’s hard to allow our heart to be cheerful.  When a loved one or we are walking through a stormy time it is hard to find something to feel cheerful about.  We, as human, tend to be very shortsighted.  When I was critically ill I regularly recited the things that gave me joy, both in the past and in the present.  It’s amazing how many things in our lives bring us joy.  Dwelling on our current problem, be it illness or anything else, does no good.  We do need to give the current problem attention to walk through it but it doesn’t need to be all consuming.  When it’s hard to get our minds off, when it’s hard to get physical or emotional strength it is time to turn to God.  Start by thanking Him for the gift of salvation through His Son.  When we start into thanks one thing will lead to another and before long we allow God’s joy to enter our heart and cheerfulness returns.  If it helps, keep a thankful list written down to remind us of all our blessings.  In and through everything life brings our way, we can still give thanks to God.
