Feed the Hungry

Mt 25:35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,

Something disturbs me about Thanksgiving and Christmas.  Many churches and other groups get together to make food baskets for the needy.  What disturbs me about this is hunger doesn’t only exist at Thanksgiving and Christmas.  Hunger exist every day of the year.  Some are helped by food pantries or food stamps but many fall “through the cracks.”  Either they are working but still below the poverty level and cannot get off work to go to a food pantry during the pantry’s open hours or they have no transportation to the food pantry.  I am disturbed that many of these churches and organizations only think of giving during these two holiday times of the year.  What can we do about it as individuals?  We can encourage groups we are in to expand their giving throughout the year.  So many of us can pick up a few extra cans of food every time we go to the grocery store.  Our church emphasizes different types of food to keep 2 pantrys full.  On pantry is not in our community and has limited hours.  The other pantry is in our church.  People from the local school are referred to us and we are in walking distance of many.  Let us be sure we feed the hungry throughout the year.
