Joseph Responds

Lk 2:4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David.

Not a lot is said about Joseph.  God was giving him a big responsibility.  He would be the earthly father of God’s only Son.  We can see from the way Joseph wanted to protect Mary even though the news of the pregnancy must have hurt him deeply what a loving man he was.  His trade was carpentry, which put him into the middle, trade class of society.  He was a descendant from King David as was Mary.  I’ve always wondered what it was in Joseph that made God choose him for such a big job.  Joseph would be the protector of God’s Son.  It was crucial for Joseph to be able to hear God.  This was confirmed by the way Joseph responded to his dreams.  Dreams would yet again direct Joseph after the birth of Jesus.  Joseph chose to respond to God even when God’s words seemed to contradict all the laws of reason and nature Joseph had learn to live by.

Sometimes we depend so much on our sense of “reasoning,” it hampers us from hearing God and His direction for our lives.  It had to take courage for Joseph to stand up to the laws of his society and take Mary as his wife when the laws said she should be stoned.  Sometimes God’s ways are at odds with man’s ways.  We need to learn to be willing to listen and respond to God over tradition or the pressure of society.
