Renewed Mind

For they who are according to the flesh mind the things of flesh, but they who are according to the Spirit the things of the Spirit. (6) For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. (Romans 8:5-6)

How are we” to be renewed in the spirit of our minds?” The spiritual alignment of the mind is critical. It makes all the difference where we set our mind.  We are not responsible for the thoughts that come into our mind.  Our mind is like a microwave tower that receives all signals in the air.  We are responsible with what we do with the signals that come into our minds.  We can accept them.  We can reject them.  We can suppress them.  We must check out the signals that go through our mind with God’s Word.  If they are “good, lovely, of good report, etc – agreeing with His Word, they are acceptable and should continue to grow in our mind and guide our decision and actions.  If they are not in agreement with God’s Word they’re to be rejected right away.  Our problem is sometimes we want to play around with an idea that is not from God.  Playing with fire is dangerous.  We enter spiritual warfare when we start to entertain an un-Godly idea.  Suppressing it is even worse because it can grow in our unconscious level and surface at any time.  Let us choose to allow God to renew our minds by immersing ourselves in His Word and subjecting all our thoughts to Him.

Mt 9:38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

I was up most of the night again grieving over the number of people who do not know Jesus and will stay separated from God from all eternity.  It grieves me because they have not know God’s love, joy or peace.  It grieves me because I know it must grieve my Lord even more because He loves them enough to suffer death and rejection on the cross that they might live with Him forever.  What am I doing about it?  One thing is consistent prayer for those I know are lost.  Another is to pray this verse of scripture – that God send workers into this harvest field.  I cannot pray those prayers in faith if I am not willing to be a part of God’s answer.  I must walk in a way that demonstrates God’s love, joy and light.  I must talk in a way that always brings glory to God.  I must be open and quick to tell others of God’s movement in my life.  I must always stay on the alert for an opening in someone’s heart and mind to hear and receive God’s Good News.  Won’t you join me in praying, watching and responding?

A Community of Love

Filed under: Uncategorized — by ginrich @ 1:15 am

Jn 13:34 “A new command I give you: Love one another.  As I have loved you, so you must love one another.

Would you like to be in a bible-believing, Spirit-filled community?  A community where loved one another earnestly with all their heart?  That kind of community would give growth to mature, solid people.  There would be no negativity or selfishness.  They would all know Christ and would follow the new command He gave us.  This is why God give us the spiritual gifts.  We need to utilize the gifts of encouragement, exhortation, administration, helps, and generosity to develop this sort of community.  Guess what.  This begins with each one of us.  When just one of us starts acting in the love of Christ it is contagious.  Love given freely spreads.  We must look at what Christ meant by love.  He said to love each other in the same way He loves us.  That is a big command.  He gave His life for us.  We don’t go to the cross, physically, today to die for others.  We can go to the cross with our own self-centered wants and desires.  We can learn, through the power of the gifts of God’s Holy Spirit to put others before our own self-interests.  We can learn to put our own critiques of others aside and reach out in love.  Choose to pass God’s gift of love to someone you have not shown that gift to today.

Gifts to Imitate

Eph 5:1 Be imitators of God,

Every time my dad came for a visit we had to have a carpentry job to keep him busy.  When our son was about 3 years old my dad would give him a bag of nails or screws.  I can still see our son toddling after his granddad carrying the bag of nails or screws everywhere his granddad went.  He would stand by his granddad and wait for him to ask for a nail or screw.  He was so delighted to be granddad’s helper.

We are given a bag of spiritual gifts when we invite Jesus into our hearts and lives.  At first we just try to follow Him through life.  Gradually we become aware of the tools He gives us and we learn to use them.  As we learn to use them our Father gives us more tools and more occasions to use them.  This is why we have the gifts.  It is not for us to look good but for us to serve our Father.  We do not claim to own any of the gifts but are willing and watching for opportunities to serve our Father at any time and any place any of the gifts are needed.  Our delight doesn’t come from the gifts but from being with our Father.  As our son grew and tried to imitate his granddad so must we grow and imitate our Father as His Son demonstrated to us when He walked this earth.

1Co 12:9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit,

The gift of healing comes in many forms. There is emotional healing. The gift of healing of emotions can come through a listening ear, a hug, a touching prayer, through confession and through the partaking of communion as well as other ways. Healing can also be for physical or financial problems. God can use anyone to minister the gift of healing but sometimes He seems to use particular people more than others. You know you have the gift of healing if God flows healing of others through you more than occasionally. I have been blessed several times to watch a healing take place as I’ve prayed for someone. I do not have the gift of healing but as with all gifts, God will use whoever is open and available at the time a particular gift is needed. We must learn to be open to all gifts – to all movements of God through His Holy Spirit – at all times. Our concentration should be on the Giver, never the gift. The gift is just a tool of God used to glorify Him and fulfill His purposes within a life of one of His children.

1Co 12:9 to another faith by the same Spirit

Our spiritual gifts do not determine our place in a spiritual hierarchy or organization.  They determine how we can best help others become like Jesus.  The gift of faith is no exception.  We all have the gift of faith to one degree or another.  Some have a lot more.  Some have this gift to the degree of having it for a more general cause – a greater coverage of God’s people.  The gift of faith is used for the common good of the Church of God, not for individual needs.  Someone with the gift of faith can be used to increase the faith of others.  It is important for us to share the faith we have with others a an encouragement for growth.  As with all gifts, the gift of faith grows through the exercise of that gift.  Are you putting your faith into practice today?  It is put into practice by praying with boldness and believing God will answer.

1Cr 12:8 To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit,

The word of knowledge is knowledge that is given to us supernaturally. It is a knowledge of things we would not know through a natural acquisition or study.  We have read of many instantces in the Old Testament prophets were given a word of knowledge.  We also see it in the New Testament when Peter answered Jesus’ question  “Well, You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” But Jesus acknowledges, “This did not come to you from flesh or blood, but a revelation of the Father.”

The word of knowledge is dangerous if not accompanied by the gift of wisdom.  It, as all of the spiritual gifts, is given for the glory of God and the good of all the saints.  It is not given to make the receiver look more knowledgeable or better or smarter than others.  As with all the gifts, it is a viable gift today.

1Co 12:8 To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom,

This gift is the message of wisdom.  We are all given wisdom from God that we need if we ask for it.  There are times extra wisdom is needed and some are given the special gift of being able to hear that wisdom from God and speak it out.  As with all words it must be tested with God’s written Word, the Holy Bible.  God will never say anything in conflict with what He has already said.  When someone says God has told them something we must be diligent in prayer to check it out before we accept it.  Then, when we have checked it out and confirmed it with His written Word we must act on it.  Failure to act can produce lack of hearing in the future.  Have you been asking God something?  Have you followed through on what He has said?  Remember He can speak through others, through circumstances, through the inner voice of His Holly Spirit and through His written Word.  It s up to us to follow through.

Gifts from God for God

Ac 2:38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

The gifts God gives us are our salvation for eternal life with Him through His Son, Jesus Christ and the gift of His Holly Spirit to enable us to serve Him and spread His love and light to others.  The gift of the Holy Spirit is shown through us in a variety of ways.   We find a partial list here:

1Co 12:7-11 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.  To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.

These are not a complete listing.  All our abilities come from God.  Some have music, some have accounting, and some have engineering.  Any talent or “gift” can be used for the glory of God.  Talents not use for His glory but for our own are misused.  We are told to do everything for the glory of our God.  Are you using your gifts or talents for His glory?

Spiritual Gifts

1Pe 4:11 If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

We may possibly be looking at spiritual gifts the next few days.  First we must look at why God gives us spiritual gifts.  The end of this verse summarizes it very well. “ that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory and the power for ever and ever.”  Spiritual gifts are not for our pleasure or blessing although they do give us pleasure and the do bless us.  They are for God’s glory.  They are tools God gives to us to enable us to give back to Him.  Without these gifts we can do nothing.  Apart from God there is nothing good.  The world has come to see things as gray but with God there is only black or white, good or evil, God or Satan.  All believers are given spiritual gifts.  Not all have the same gifts or the same number of gifts but are given as God chooses.  Have you identified your spiritual gifts?  Have others confirmed you have those gifts?  A gift given must be opened and used to be complete.  Seek to know your gifts and use them for the glory of God.
