Mob Mentality

Proverbs 4:14 Do not set foot on the path of the wicked or walk in the way of evil men. (The Holy Bible, New International Version)

This is a verse that advises us not to go along with the crowd. We see so many cases of “mob mentality:” major fights after a sports game, rioting and looting stores when something doesn’t go the way we should. It seems when a few people become angry they have the power to encourage others to act out the way they do. We tend to cease to think on our own and find it easier to go along with the crowd. It tends to be so contagious that it really gets out of hand. Sometimes I wonder if we can’t use this “crowd mentality” for the good. It would be interesting to see if we Christians could spur up as much excitement for going to a church service as others spur up for going to a sports event. So often it appears we are going to our services because we have to. Where is our excitement? Isn’t the worship of God more joyful and exciting than rooting for a sports team? We must ask ourselves what we choose: worship and rejoice and thank our Creator, God or yell and cheer for a group of people and get angry if the don’t perform the way we think they should. There is nothing wrong with sports. What is wrong is our priorities and our attitudes.
