Love Is Commitment

Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us (The Holy Bible, New International Version.)

The love of humans is an emotional love. It bases its existence on feelings in the self. It turns on and off by desires, self-gratification and moods. God’s love is based on commitment. God does have feelings/emotions but His love never turns off because of disappoints. Even when we sin God loves us. Even when God is angry He still loves us. We, as humans, often fail to understand real love. We confuse our misconception of love experienced by humans as a reflection on God’s love. This leads us to trying to persuade God of His love by bartering with Him. His love is not for trade or sale. His love is through His mercy and grace through His Son Jesus Who came to bridge the gap between mankind and God and show us God’s unconditional love. He commanded us to do the same – love unconditionally. We have trouble loving our fellow beings that way and even have trouble loving God that way. We make it about how we feel and what we want and don’t want. Let us pray for God to help us become more God and other focused and less self-focused. Let us learn to practice the commitment of unconditional love both of God and of mankind.
