Luke 13:24 “Make every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to. (The Holy Bible, New International Version)

Why do we have to make an effort to enter through God’s door of salvation? Isn’t salvation a free gift from God? Yes, it is free through Jesus Christ, God’s Son. There is nothing we can do to earn it. No amount of money will buy it. No amount of “good deeds” will deserve it. The way is difficult to enter. It requires honesty to ourselves. We must come to the place of humility and admit we are sinners and undeserving of God’s love and forgiveness. Many give lip service to that but still think they are better than others and more deserving than others. We like to put ratings on sins. We like to think one sin is worse than another. Any sin separates us from God. God will not stand in the presence of sin. That is why He had to turn away His face from His only Son, Jesus, as Jesus took on the sins of all humanity for all time. We fool ourselves thinking our sins of thought are of no consequence. We try to hide them, not only from others, but also from ourselves. We tend to forget God knows our deepest thoughts. Let us continue to learn repentance and develop the habit of keeping short accounts with God during this Lenten season. God already knows. Let us determine to be honest with ourselves. It’s okay to admit our disobedience. God loves us even though He knows we are sinners. That’s why Jesus came.
