Luke 23:34 Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up his clothes by casting lots. (The Holy Bible, New International Version)

Here He is, dying on the cross, with mobs of people taunting Him. What does Jesus do in the midst of acute pain and all that taunting? He asks His Father, God, to forgive them. He doesn’t wait for time to heal, He asks in the midst of the onslaught while it is still going on and will continue. This is love beyond my own understanding. When someone hurts me I spend some time being angry and wanting them to get paid back. Jesus had none of that in Him. He only had love and compassion. He has that for us today. He knows we are week in spirit and will deny him over and over yet He prayed for us and asked His Father, God to forgive us. He said we don’t know what we are doing. That is so true. Each time I deny Him through my words said or unsaid or my actions done or not done, I didn’t realize what I was doing. I didn’t mean to disobey Him. I didn’t mean to deny Him through lack of words or actions. Yet I fuss at myself and don’t forgive myself as readily as God forgives me. He doesn’t fuss at me, He only points out my lack or action so I can repent (turn my back to that) and move on with Him. What wonderful love is this? On this day between death and resurrection let us remember this love, let us confess and repent our continual denials. Let us prepare to celebrate tomorrow.
