Reaching Out

Jeremiah 22:16 He defended the cause of the poor and needy, and so all went well. Is that not what it means to know me?” declares the LORD. (The Holy Bible, New International Version)

What does it mean to really know God? Jesus said if we know Him we also know the Father because they are One. In Jeremiah God gives us one example of what it means to know Him. We defend others. We don’t stand by and say, “Oh, isn’t that a shame.” We do something to help out. A few days ago the news told about a mayor who went into a burning house to save a neighbor. That definitely is reaching out. But we also need to learn to reach out in the “small” ways. Sometimes all that is needed is a hand to hold. Sometimes a meal is needed or a phone call. It sees we are so wrapped up in our own hectic schedules we fail to notice when others are hurting. A friend shared with me how someone told her their own church did not reach out to them when they were hurting. That is so very sad. We need to be sure the world sees Christians as loving, caring people. Our question today is are we willing to open our eyes and see what needs are probably right around us? Maybe even next door.
