All Our Needs

Romans 8:27 (NET)  And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes on behalf of the saints according to Godʼs will.

This verse has taken on a new impact for me.  God’s word is the living word for many reasons.  His word give us life.  His word also seems to grow as our understanding grows.  I’ve known and experienced the Holy Spirit praying through and for me but I’ve never thought how He would turn my prayers into perfection in accordance to God’s will.  All I need do is pray with the limited understanding and know that God’s Holy Spirit in me will turn my words and thoughts into the words and thoughts that are in agreement with God’s perfect will for me and for those I am praying for.  God loves us so very much.  He provides for all our needs–even the words we need when we pray.  The question is are we willing to look to Him and allow Him to meet our every need?  God will not force us.  He reaches His hand out to us and it is up to us to reach our hands to Him.  He won’t walk for us but will enable us to walk and will walk with us.

Romans 2:11 For God does not show favoritism. (The Holy Bible, New International Version)

God shows no favoritism. That is a hard concept for us. We continually show favoritism. We choose who we want to be with over others. We treat people differently according to how up high on our “favorite” thermometer they are. A teacher might say they have no favorite but they do. It’s hard to believe God loves each of us equally. It’s hard to believe He chooses each of us for specific works. The works are as different as we are from each other but no work is more precious to God than any other when it is His Holy Spirit Who works and moves through us. We see people like Billy Graham and say he must be extra special to God. God doesn’t favor Billy Graham any more than He favors each of us. The question is will we choose to believe God loves each of us equally? He gave His only Son, Jesus, in the same proportion to each one of us. He gave His all. To say God doesn’t love “me” as much as He loves “you” is a lie of Satan. Accept it today. You are very special to God. You are as special to Him as anyone who ever walked or will work this earth. Nothing any of us can ever do will change God’s love for us. He loves you as His child no matter what you say, do or feel.

Moving On

Hebrews 8:12 For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more (The Holy Bible, New International Version)

I prayed, “Lord, I did it again. I’m sorry. Please forgive me.” He responded in that quiet, inner voice, “Did what again. When I forgive I forget. Your slate is washed clean in the blood of My Son.” We have the capacity to remember our sins and we tend to beat ourselves up over them. This is especially true if we have a problem in a specific area that we keep repeating. Beating ourselves up over it, continuing to remember it and hold it against ourselves tends to keep it in our mind and make it more of a possibility or probability of repeating it. We need to join Paul in “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead (from Philippians 3:13). This is not because of our worthiness but because of the worthiness of Jesus Christ. When we keep looking back at what we’ve done (good or bad) we can’t look to the present. We are living in the past. The question is are we willing to forget the past and move on, trusting God through His Holy Spirit to work within us in Him and His love and power? Where we put our mind is our choice. We can choose to keep looking back or we can choose to look where God has us in the present and move on with Him.

Consecrate for Sanctification

1Thessolonians 5:23 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ (The Holy Bible, New International Version)

Leviticus 20:7 “ ‘Consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am the LORD your God.

God tells us to consecrate ourselves. To consecrate means to set aside or dedicate. This is man’s action to God. It is our surrender to Him to have His way with us. Man can only consecrate. It is God Who must sanctify. Man cannot sanctify himself no matter what he does or how good he is. Sanctification only comes through the cross of Jesus. Sanctification cannot happen without consecration. We must first yield thoughts, our actions, life, and ourselves to God. We must be open to the infilling of God’s Holy Spirit. Then the act of sanctification can begin. Our question is are we willing to yield our entire beings to God and allow Him to sanctify us? Many are unwilling because they don’t want to be different than their cultures. Many are afraid God will want something of them they can’t do. We either believe or accept God’s love for us, which leads to total trust, or we don’t. The choice is ours. What do you choose?

Romans 7:15 (NET)  For I dont understand what I am doing. For I do not do what I want- instead, I do what I hate.

I think we can all relate to Paul’s problem.  I can’t count the times words I didn’t want to say what came out of my mouth nor the times my actions were not what I really wanted them to be.  We, as sinful humans, don’t have the power to keep from saying or doing the wrong things.  It takes the power of God’s Holy Spirit to move us from sinful words and actions to God pleasing and loving ones.  So, what do we do about it?  We join Paul in thanks for God’s love, forgiveness and power as we practice and learn to walk in His Spirit rather than in our fleshy, sinful nature.  The question is are we willing to learn and comitt our time, energy and love?  Let us ask God to free His power of His Holy Spirit in our minds and hearts.

Doing What I Don’t Want

I finally got the courage.  After many years praying for a beloved relative, I finally had the courage to ask her what her relationship is with Jesus.  She was pleased I asked and asked me about her adult children.  I said I have been praying for them as long as I prayed for her and told her to add her prayers to mine.  I don’t know why I waited so long to ask her.  I was more concerned for our relationship than I was for her eternal life with God.  This is sinful, self-love to be more concerned about a relationship than someone’s eternal life.  I’m sure some of you have friends or family you’ve not discussed the two options for their future.  Our priorities are not with God.  We need to pray first for the ground to be ready and the ears nd heart and mind open then we must be bold and tell them about the only way to eternal life with the one true God.  I pray for each of you to start or continue praying then listen for God to gently I,press you that it’s time to share the way.  We join Paul in the continued forgiveness and patience of God as we learn to walk in the ways of His Holy Spirit rather than the ways of our sinful flesh.  The question is, are we willing to learn?

It’s God’s Call

Romans 9:20 But who are you, O man, to talk back to God? “Shall what is formed say to him who formed it, ‘Why did you make me like this?’ (The Holy Bible, New International Version)

People have told me they could never write a devotion or preach a sermon. I’m right in there with them. There is no way I can do either of those or anything else of value if God did not equip me. It is God Who made us and equips us. Apart from Him none of us can do anything of value. But each one of us can do anything God has called us to do. Many of us miss out because we look at our own capabilities and perceived shortcomings rather than looking at God, His love and His power. He shaped each one of us to be able to allow Him to flow through us in the way and the timing He wants. Who are we to say we can’t when it is God Who calls. The question is are we willing to allow God to use us in any way and at any time He chooses? Let us be open and willing vessels.

Out of Love

1 Corinthians 13:3 If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing. (The Holy Bible, New International Version)

My father was a career military officer and I was raised to obey. I obeyed because of not wanting the discipline I would face if I didn’t do as told. Many Christians work hard to obey God’s written word. Some think the measure of being good Christians is gauged by good deeds and following the commands in the Bible. Reasons are as different as people. Some do it to look good. Others do it because they think doing good is the key to God’s blessings. We are told in the 13th chapter of 1 Corinthians the real key is love. If love is not our motivating force we work in vain. Yes, God does want us to do good but He wants us to do good out of love. God is Love. Whatever we do without love will parish. Love goes into eternity. Our question is are we reaching out to others in love? The more of God’s love we pour out the more room in us for His love.

Small Becomes Big

Matthew 13:32 Though it is the smallest of all your seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and perch in its branches.” (The Holy Bible, New International Version)

From small to big is the cycle of life. We start as infants, small and grow into bigger forms as adults. Faith also starts small and grows with use and proper nourishment (Bible study, prayer, meditation and use.) Most everything starts with small. I know Jesus as my personal Lord and Savior because of a smile from a lady in church. A smile seems like a small thing yet it changed my life. I went from a church member and employee who knew the fact of Jesus being God’s Son to a believer and follower because of that smile. We tend to look for God to use us for big things and we miss out on sowing small seeds that will become big. The question for us today is are we willing to allow God to use us in the small, seemingly ordinary things and allow Him to determine the growth that will come forth? Maybe all He wants us to do this day is say thank you to someone who needs a kind word. Let us pay attention to the little and allow God to bring the growth.

Sin Nature

1John1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

We are born with a sin nature,  this makes it natural for us it sin.  Just observe very young children.  Our daughters at 16 months apart.  The oldest was at 3 year old school 2 mornings a week.  One of those mornings I found her almost 2 year old sister standing in the hall with a yellow marker in her hand.  Behind her was yellow markings all over the wall.  She was seepking a few words but had never out 3 in one sentence until then.  Her finest sentence?  ” Debbie did it.”. Debbie wasn’t home.  It was the inate, inherited sinful nature that caused her first lie.  When we sin we rationalize it as a form of self-preservation.  We don’t have faith in God’s provision, blessings and protection for us and we separate ourselves from Him through sinning.
