Acts 5:4 Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied to men but to God.” (The Holy Bible, New International Version)

This is the event involving 2 of the new Christian Church members in Acts. The church was living in community and those who wanted were selling everything and giving it all to the church community. All would share in all needs and all would contribute. This was not a requirement but a choice. Ananias and Sapphira, a married couple in that church community decided to sell their property but the decided to keep a goodly portion for themselves but not say anything. They agreed on an amount to claim if they were asked. Both of then ended up dead. Read the entire account. God doesn’t lie and He expects us not to lie. There was no need for that couple to lie, as nothing was required of them except the truth. The lie was to themselves, to those in the church and to God. In our culture today we tend to live with a lot of lies. Before we judge anyone else to harshly we must look at ourselves. We lie about the amount of food we eat, exercise, time management and so on. Many of our lies are to make us appear different than we are to other people. All of our lies deceive ourselves. God knows the truth. We cannot hide anything from Him. Our question is do we choose to live open and honestly with God, others and ourselves?
