Be Perfect

Matthew 5:48
Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

That is quite a command. How can a human prone to sin ever be perfect in the same way God is perfect? We cannot. So why would Jesus command this? The word is “as.”. It doesn’t say be equal to God. There is no way we could ever do that. We are to live as closely as we can as imitators/followers of God. He sent His Son, Jesus, to walk and live among mankind so we could see how to walk. God is love and we are to emmerse ourselves in His love and allow it to pour out through us to all those around us. Our question is do we allow ourselves to be emmersed in God’s love and if so, do we allow it to flow through us to those around us without judgement or criticism? If we’re really honest we must admit we fall far short. Let us take some time today to ask God where we are blocking His love and how we can spread what we have received to others. Let us be willing to be perfectly in the midst of God’s love.

No Difference

Galatians 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

I was on cafeteria duty at our local high school. I observed a boy sitting at a table by himself. All around him we tables full of laughing and chatting teens. I hurt for this boy. He is nice and quiet and smart but because he speaks a little differently he is treated differently. God says we are all alike. It doesn’t matter how we look. We can have long or short hair, big or small noses, plain or stuttering speech or anything else but we are all equal in His sight. Since all are equal with us in God’s sight should we treat people differently according to their looks, speech, beliefs or race? Next time you feel like giving someone a cold shoulder let’s remember God loves them as much as He loves you. Instead of avoiding them reach out and let yourself see what God sees.

For or Against

Matthew 12:30 He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.

We have only 2 options in life. We can be for God or against God. We can’t vacillate between the two. We can’t be foe Him sometimes and against at other times. There is no partial. With God it is all or nothing. We cannot choose which of His commands and precepts we will follow when and which we will table for consideration later. God gave us Hia all. He expects us to give Him all all. Our question is do we choose God or do we choose the world, ourselves and Satan? Ask God today what areas in your life you’re holding back from him.

Positions

Psalms 141:2 May my prayer be set before you like incense; may the lifting up of my hands be like the evening sacrifice. (The Holy Bible, New International Version)

When a person is insecure or trying to hide something they generally fold their arms in front of their chest. To raise our hands up in the air is a sign of surrender and openness. There is much in the Bible about body positions when we pray and praise God. We are to stand, we are to kneel, we are to lay prostrate but I can’t find where we are to just sit. However, for most of us that is the position we take. I would encourage you to try praying with your hands extended up toward heaven. This shows God we are totally open to Him. It shows Him we don’t want to hide anything from Him. It is also good for us for it helps make us aware of being open – not only for God to really have us entirely but for us to be entirely open to have Him within us. While we are considering lifting our hands up to Him more often let us also consider kneeling – a sign of reverence and submission, and laying prostrate – a sign of total humility. Let us not become so lazy that all our prayer time is spent sitting or while we are on the go doing something else. Let us open up our entire being to our Maker.

Precious Thoughts

Psalms 139:17 How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! (The Holy Bible, New International Version)

Are His thoughts really precious to us? To be precious means they are of great value. We are so full of our own thoughts. We are so concerned about what others think. Do we give God’s thoughts first place in our hearts and minds? Do we even know or seek to know any of His thoughts. As we study and meditate on His written Word, the Holy Bible, we start to learn some of the thoughts of God. As we learn to pray and listen He reveals some of His thoughts to us through His Holy Spirit. Are His thoughts precious enough to us for us to take the time to listen? Our question is will we allow our own thoughts and the thoughts of others push out the thoughts of God from our hearts and minds. Let us indeed ask Him to make His thoughts truly precious to us and seek to know them with all our being.

Seven Times a Day

Psalms 119:164 Seven times a day I praise you for your righteous laws. (The Holy Bible, New International Version)

At least seven times a day the psalmist praised God for His righteous laws. Do we do that? Do we do it even one time a day? Do we find ourselves picking and choosing which laws we will obey and when we will do it? God told us to help those in need. Will we stop to help someone when we’re on our way to “an important event?’ Jesus always stopped to help. Do we really praise God for what He tells us to do in His written Word, The Holy Bible or do we look at His instructions as burdens we must carry? Our question today is an attitude check. We can only live in obedience to God through the power of His Holy Spirit. It is His gift of His Holy Spirit that also enables us to give Him thanks. Let us choose to be thankful for His instruction book, the Holy Bible and for His Holy Spirit. When our plans are interrupted by another’s need let us rejoice that God allows us to be His hands, feet and mouth on this earth regardless of our continual sinful nature. Let us praise God continually throughout our day.

A Found Treasure

Psalms 119:162 I rejoice in your promise like one who finds great spoil. (The Holy Bible, New International Version)

If any of us were to walk down the road and find a couple of twenty-dollar bills we would pick them up and tell most all our friends of our find. If you are reading this you have probably found something worth more than all the money in the world. You have found your relationship with God through His Son, Jesus Christ. This “find” is beyond value. Our question is are we as excited as we would be if we found those twenty dollar bills? Have we told our friends of our “find?” If we found several thousand dollars we would be telling everyone we meet. We have something worth far more than several thousand dollars. We have something that will take us into and through all eternity in the very real Presence of the God of all creation. Are we talking about it? There is more than enough to share. Sharing won’t take any of our eternity away from us but it will bring more people with us and it will please the God Whose Presence we will be in forever. Let’s just not think about this. Let’s do this. Pass on God’s plan for eternity in His Presence. It’s available to all who will say yes to His Son, Jesus Christ.

Rear Guard

Isaiah 58:8 Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard. (The Holy Bible, New International Version)

This verse follows verses about feeding the poor and helping those in need. The verse talks about looking at the needs in front of us and ministering to the glory of God. As we go forward we need not worry about what we leave behind. Our son served as the “Rear Guard” when his unit was sent to Iraq. His job as rear guard was to take care of any of the problems the families of the troops deployed encountered while their love ones were busy serving our country. God says He is our rear guard. We are here to minister in His name and to His glory to the ones He places before us. He will be our rear guard. He will see to our needs. Our question is are we so busy looking behind us that we fail to see what God has put in front of us? Let us learn to push on, serving God with what He presents to us and leaving what’s behind in His hands.

Mother’s Day

2 Timothy 1:5 I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also. (The Holy Bible, New International Version)

So many of us look to Proverbs 31 as an example of a good mother. Here Paul is writing Timothy. He gives credit to Timothy’s mother and grandmother for Timothy’s faith. It appears not only did the teach Timothy about Jesus and God, they also showed him through their lives. As mothers and grandmothers we have an important role in the lives of our children. We start teaching them about God’s love the first time we hold them. As they grow they watch us. I’m sure Lois and Eunice did more than teach and demonstrate faith to Timothy. I’m sure they did a lot of praying for him. The question of teaching and demonstrating is fairly obvious. Our question today, on Mother’s Day, is are we praying for our children and grandchildren with the intensity of God’s love? Pray for at least one child today and have a blessed Mother’s Day.

Deep Within

Psalms 51:6 Surely you desire truth in the inner parts; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place. (The Holy Bible, New International Version)

This is part of a prayer from the psalmist to God. In it the psalmist recognizes his sinfulness and God’s power and compassion to forgive. He recognizes God is truth and wisdom and the only way to hear truth and get wisdom is to listen deep within ourselves. When we receive God’s Son, Jesus, as our Redeemer, Lord and Savior we also receive the gift of God’s Holy Spirit. It is this Spirit Who convicts us of our sin, reveals God’s truth and give us God’s wisdom. Our question is are we willing to be quiet and listen? Being quiet is something which needs to be practiced. It is difficult to shut out all the interfering thoughts without blanking our minds so much we can’t even hear God. Let us learn to take time each day to tune out the world and tune in God through His Holy Spirit.
