Leaving Fruit

Ps 92:12 –14 The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; planted in the house of the LORD, they will flourish in the courts of our God. They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green, (The Holy Bible, New International Version)

This has been a long and hard week in our church. We lost 2 members within 24 hours. These members graduated to their reward in heaven. Both were in what is considered to be “old age.” We will surely miss them but as we look around we see the fruit they bore as they walked this earth. Both were very loved and beautiful men of God. Both had a very strong witness for God and His love and faithfulness. One of them, in his 90’s said as long as he could get out of bed to go to the bathroom he would be at church to praise his God on Sunday morning and to encourage his brothers and sisters in the Lord. His example had a great impact on those who find excuses not to gather with others on Sunday morning. It is always easy to find an excuse: it’s raining, it’s too hot, I’m too tired, I don’t have time and on and on. For our dear brother there was never a reason for an excuse. God said to set apart a day to rest. This is not to “rest” in bed, at the lake or any other “restful” activity but to rest in prayer and praises to Him. Gathering with other believers is like taking a vitamin pill. The praise, prayers and encouragement of others along with ours lifts us up and energizes us for a new week of walking and serving in the power and love of our God through Christ Jesus His Son and through His Holy Spirit. We are happy for our brothers who are rejoicing with God and when we feel sad because of missing them we can look around and see the fruits they left continue to grow. Our question is are we allowing God’s Holy Spirit to grow fruits through us that will grow when we join Him in heaven?
