Luke 6:41-42 Why do you see the speck in your brotherʼs eye, but fail to see the beam of wood in your own? How can you say to your brother, ʻBrother, let me remove the speck from your eye,ʼ while you yourself donʼt see the beam in your own? You hypocrite! First remove the beam from your own eye, and then you can see clearly to remove the speck from your brotherʼs eye.

We dwell on the fact that the beam needs to be removed from our own eye.  We are also told we are to help others remove the specks in their eye but only after we remove the beam in ours.  Why aren’t many of us there?  I don’t know about you but I keep getting beams in my eye and seldom and at the point where I can help another remove specs from their eyes. One of my beams could and probably is my unloving judgement of the specks in otners. We are often quick to think that the sins of others are so much worse thn ours. Trying to help others when our own vision is poor leads to resentments and hurts.  We cannot help until God has dealt with us and cleaned that particular problem or sin from us.  Then we are able to help another with a like problem.  This is one of the many reasons God allows us to walk through various trials.  As we walk out successfully through His Holy Spirit we are better able to relate to others in the same trials and better able to help when they know we’ve been there.  Our question is are we willing to be honest about the beams in our own eyes and allow God, through His Holy Spirit or through someone else who His Holy Spirit wants to minister to us help us?  It is not a “I can do it myself” attitude that makes us right with God and with others.  It is only a humble spirit that can stand before God.
