Galatians 5:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, depravity, idolatry, sorcery, hostilities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish rivalries, dissensions, factions, envying, murder, drunkenness, carousing, and similar things. I am warning you, as I had warned you before: Those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God!

I have a problem with Halloween.  It’s not the dressing up, the parties or going to get treats.  It’s the costumes so many choose to wear.  We are told to have nothing to do with certain things.  One of them is witchcraft and satan worship.  Dressing up as a witch or as satan or anything else that gives honor to any act of evil is very repulsive to me.  There are so many different characters to copy in our costumes other than those who represent the ways of sin and evil.  It is good for children to have fun but they should also learn that we are to have nothing to do with things that represent evil and witches and goblins and etc. are real and in satan’s world.  This is my personal interpretation.  Each must decide for themselves but I choose not to honor things or characters that represent evil that is still present in this world.  Have a fun, safe and satan-free Halloween.

Mark 4:12 so that although they look they may look but not see, and although they hear they may hear but not understand, so they may not repent and be forgiven.”

I was tired of repeating twice everything I was saying to someone.  I ended the conversation saying I didn’t want to repeat everything twice so I left.  I no sooner got up when I heard God say, “I often must repeat things to you.  Should you do any less for others?”  There are many reasons we don’t hear.  Sometimes our minds are so occupied with something else we are not aware of someone (or God) speaking to us.  Sometimes we just choose not to really hear what is being said.  Sometimes our hearing is blocked by an ear problem or, with God, an confessed sin problem.  There are many reasons why we don’t hear what is being said.  With God, we must stay up to date on our confessions and pray that the Holy Spirit will always make us sensitive to His voice.  Our question is do we want to hear Him at all times?  Sometimes we choose to ignore what God has to say because we desire to do our own thing.  Let us learn to be totally committed to hearing God say whatever He wants us to know and whenever He wants to tell us.

John 7:37-38 On the last day of the feast, the greatest day, Jesus stood up and shouted out, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink. Just as the scripture says, ʻFrom within him will flow rivers of living water.ʼ”

My first two years in college were in a town where they purified their water with sulfur.  The smell was not very present nor was the taste.  I managed to go for several weeks without drinking.  Then, suddenly, I realized I was very thirsty.  I gulped down the water.  We are sometimes that way with drinking of the living water of God’s Holy Spirit.  He is in us but we choose or forget to drink of Him.  When we become very thirsty we sometimes look too the wrong places for our water; we tend to look at the enticements of the world around us thinking these will satisfy our thirst.  When God created us He put in us a thirst to fellowship with Him. Nothing else can fill that place no matter how hard or in how many ways we try to fill it.  Our question is will we choose to drink of Him through prayer, meditation, Bible study, gathering with other believers and sharing His love with others?  All these things help us to drink of His water and as we drink His water lives in us and spills over to others.  Let us drink.

God’s Pleasure

Luke 12:32  “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father is well pleased to give you the kingdom.

God’s pleasure is to give us His Kingdom.  To do that He also gives us all that is necessary for us to come into His Kingdom.  The first thing we need to do to get there is to accept His invitation.  This invitation comes through His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ.  We must accept Jesus into our hearts, minds and lives and receive His Holy Spirit for there is no other way to God’s Kingdom.  After we do this we start learning how to conduct ourselves in God’s Kingdom.  He has given us a manual of instruction which we have called “The Holy Bible.”  In there are all the instructions we need to learn how to live and work in His Kingdom.  He has also given us a means to communicate with Him through what we call “prayer.”  It is our responsibility to talk to Him and listen to Him and ask Him for what we think we need.  Sometimes what we think we need and what God’s knows we need are  different.  We are to trust Him as a little child trusts the loving parent to know what is best.  Like the little child, sometimes we forget and just look at what we want and throw a temper tantrum.  The parent always forgives the child.  As we grow the temper tantrums cease and we learn to flow.  Let us believe and trust as a little child but also grow in God and learn to walk and work in His Kingdom.

Romans 13:1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except by Gods appointment, and the authorities that exist have been instituted by God.

In the United States we think we are the ones who select our government leaders through our election process.  We listen to their speeches, read about them and think we use our intellect to pick the best of the lot.  We should do all that but there is even more to do before we vote. God says our leaders are there by His appointment.  We do have a major part in who is leading.  We must pray and seek God for the answers of who  we should elect.  Sometimes it seems we have heard wrong.  Sometimes it seems God didn’t come through for our country.  This is forgetting the power of God.  Our question is will we do our part by praying then by voting on what we hear God speaking through the quiet inner voice of His Holy Spirit?  After the election results we may think God didn’t come through or we heard wrong but God is more powerful than any of our mistakes.  Our question then is will we pray for our leaders every day?  Let us put away our apathy and be obedient to God’s Word by praying and not complaining.

Word Spoken

Psalms 139:4 Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O LORD, you know it altogether.

How often we “put our foot in our mouth” by saying a word we shouldn’t say?  I know I have on numerous times,  Once a word is spoken it can’t be taken back.  God has provided a solution for what I call “foot in mouth disease.”. He says He knows our words before they form in our mouth.  The question is are we willing to slow down our words enough to listen to Him?  It doesn’t take long if we really want to hear.  I’m getting better on listening before speaking it but I still get it in my mind and heart and speak it softly to myself.  As I do this I sence God correcting me.  With practice I will become better at wanting to hear God than I want to think and say the word I shouldn’t.  It is usually a word that would make somebody hurt or feel bad. It could be a word of gossip.  There are many things that word could be that we would regret after hearing from God.  Would it not be better to listen to God first before saying or even thinking the word?

John 13:7  Jesus replied, “You do not understand what I am doing now, but you will understand after these things.”

When I was a small child and one of my parents would tell me to do something or even not do something I would always ask why.  Their usual answer was “Because I told you so.”  Even though God has said we are to become as little children He was not talking about our demand to know why on many things.  He wants us to obey His Word through trust, not through understanding.  He wants us to accept in faith His direction and His protection in our walk on this earth.  We need to understand what He tells us but not the why.  The why is not necessary for obedience.  When we walk through a trial quite often we walk out with an understanding as to what God wanted us to learn in that trial.  We need the trusts of a little trial to be glad, to consider it joy, when God gives us an opportunity to grow deeper, learn more and understand more of His love and power.  Our question is are we willing to give up or demand to know why before we walk it out in obedience and trust?  He promises in the right time we will understand.

Honored With Fruits

John 15:8 My Father is honored by this, that you bear much fruit and show that you are my disciples.

God is honored when we bear much fruit.  In our bearing of fruit we demonstrate to the world the love and power of God.  Our question is what is the fruit God wants us to bear and how do we do it.  We read in Galatians 5:22  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,  These are the fruits we are to bear.  We cannot grow these fruits on our own.  It takes God’s Holy Spirit within us to plant the seeds of these fruits.  Then it takes the trials and experiences God sends our way to grow the fruits.  I’ve had fruit in a bowl that just sat there.  I could admire it but if I didn’t use it, eat it, it would rot.  As our fruit God grows within us we must be sure to use that fruit in service to God.  This service is in sharing all our fruit with all those God sends our way.  It is through the sharing of these fruits that God is honored and more of His created people can become adopted into His family through His Son, Jesus.  Our question is what are we doing with our fruits?  Are we content to just admire what God is growing in us?  Are we content with just one or two fruits and ignore any others?  Let us honor God in receiving, growing and using all fruits the Holy Spirit brings us.  God wants us to have all the fruits, grow them and use them for His glory.

How Many Hairs

Matthew 10:30 Even all the hairs on your head are numbered.

Do you know how many individual hairs are on your head? I don’t. I guess if I was bald it would be easy. This verse is really talking about how deeply and completely God knows us – even better than we know ourselves. It also tells us there are no big things versus small things in God’s eyes. All things are equally important. We humans classify things as little or big. We say we are telling a “little white lie to keep from hurting someone’s feelings.” We think it’s okay to walk past someone with a need because we don’t have time or just don’t want to help. We pretend not to hear or notice things. God hears and notices everything. He knows when we notice things and walk away. He knows what’s in our hearts. He knows what attitude we have about each and every thing. He’s been dealing with me on attitude. At first it was after I opened my mouth about something. Now it’s as soon as I think of saying or doing or not doing something. I hear the word “attitude” and say it to myself. Then I ask God’s forgiveness and help in bringing my attitude into line with His will. Since He knows me so very well as to know how many hairs I have on my head I know there is nothing I can hide from Him. I don’t want to hide anything from Him. I want to quit hiding things from myself because I want to know all God wants me to know. Our question is are we willing to see ourselves as God sees us? He loves us so completely that He wants any darkness within us to move out and give more room for His Light and His Love.

1 John 5:14 And this is the confidence that we have before him: that whenever we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.

Have you every prayed for something and thought you never got an answer?  I’m sure that has happened to everyone many times.  Our problem is asking according to His will for us.  His will is for us to be one in Him and He One in us.  When we ask Jesus into our hearts and lives we develop the same will.  Our minds and emotions and desires are very fallible.  We do not always know what we really need.  It’s even hard sometimes to know what we really want.  One of our granddaughters says “I want that.” to everything she sees advertised on television.  Many times what we think we want is not good for us or what we will be wanting after we get it.  Sometimes what we ask will separate us from our strongest desire.  Just like us as parent of small children, God knows what is best for us and what we really want.  Our question is do we trust Him to fulfill our lives with our needs?  He blesses us not only with our needs but with a good amount of our wants and material desires as well.  We are to seek first His Kingdon and His righteousness through Jesus and we can be assured our life will be full and abundant.  As the psalmist says, (Psalms 27:4)  I have asked the Lord for one thing-this is what I desire I want to live in the Lord s house all the days of my life, so I can gaze at the splendor of the Lord and contemplate in his temple.  With the assurance of this desire being fulfilled we need not be disappointed when what we pray for is delayed or when He gives us something else instead of what we ask.  He is always answering the desires of our heart.
