Confession Before Forgiveness

1 John 1:9  But if we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous, forgiving us our sins and cleansing us from all unrighteousness.

There is a big “But” here before our sins are forgiven.  There is something very necessary before we can be cleansed from all our unrighteousness.  We must first confess our sins.  Sin is anything that separates us from God.  God is love and will not be in the presence of anything that is not love.  We tend to only call big, bad things as sin.  Sin is not only present in many of our actions and our treatment of others, sin is very present in our thoughts and our self-desires (even unspoken ones).  All these must be confessed to God before forgiveness and cleansing will occur.  Our confession is not for God’s benefit.  He knows about them before we are aware of them.  Our confession is for us to see who and what we are when we are not walking in obedience to our God.  Our confession is for us to take responsibility for our actions, inactions and thoughts and not only ask God’s forgiveness and cleansing but also for the power and love of His Holy Spirit to continually fill us and enable us to walk in love and obedience and pass His love and desire for obedience to those He puts on our path.  This is not a once a year, once a month, once a week process.  It is something we must do each and every day.  Our question is do we have the trust in God to see who and what we really are without His love in us?
