Love in Action

John 3:16   For this is the way God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

Tomorrow is the first Sunday in Advent, the season for preparing and celebrating the first coming of Jesus, God’s Son.  During this season we want to be with those we love.  The birth of Jesus in human flesh started with God wanting to be with those He loves – the people He created.  Notice nothing is said about God feeling love for the world but that God loved the world.  Feelings can come into loving but love is an action.  God took the action of love in sending His Son Jesus to us to demonstrate His love for us.  Jesus didn’t demonstrate it through emotions though emotions were present.  He demonstrated God’s love through action.  He met people were they were, He met their needs, He taught them about the love of God, He prayed for them and He stretched out His arms on the cross for them.  Each one of us is a part of “them” who Jesus came to love.  As we enter the Advent season let’s check our loving, our loving of God and our loving of the people God loves (all people).  Our question is are we showing God’s love in action?  Are we picking and choosing who we will show that love to?  Does God bring a stranger across our path to love but since we don’t feel “love” we turn our backs and walk away?  Let us pray for God’s Holy Spirit to make us more aware of needs around us and allow God to love through us.  It might be buying a stranger a meal, letting someone into your traffic lane, holding the door for someone, letting them in line in front of you.  There are numerous ways to allow God’s love to flow through us in ways that don’t seem important to us but they might change the heart and direction of another.
