Words We Use

Mark 4:33 So a with many parables like these, he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear.

If you are a regular reader of these devotions you know I am a person of few words.  I like to use as few words as possible to convey me subject and its meaning.  This is especially appreciated when I preach. This is okay as long as people know how I use my words and their meaning.  The same word can mean different things to different people according to where they’re from.  When we were newly weds we spent hours discussing the meaning of just one word.  Jesus addressed this problem by teaching in parables.  His parables varied according to the people who were listening.  He used examples to explain His meaning that were part of their everyday life.  When we speak we use words familiar and comfortable to us.  We need to put ourselves in the hearers’ place and use words that are comfortable to them.  Just as we don’t use the sane words when we talk to a very young child as we do with an adult, we should not use the same words with a non-believer that we use in churches.  To spread God’s love we must do as Jesus did; relate to who and where the hearer is.  Let us stretch ourselves and really spread God’s word and live in understandable and receivable ways
