Lay Down Our Life

1 John 3:16. We have come to know love by this: that Jesus laid down his life for us; thus we ought to lay down our lives for our fellow Christians.

Lay down our life?  That’s a heavy statement.  We usually think that only applies to being willing to die for someone else to live.  Jesus died so we could live eternally in the presence of God.  There are other ways to lay our life down for someone else.  How many times have we responded to someone’s née with “I’m sorry, I don’t have time.” Or maybe we’ve said, “It’s too inconvenient for me.”    There are many excuses we find to keep our own life as we want it.  Our question is are we willing to acknowledge our lives aren’t really ours?  Without God there is no life.  It is by His love and grace we take our next breath.  Why is it so hard for us to lay down something that really isn’t ours?  It is sinful pride and selfishness so much a part of our human nature.  How do we get over this attitude?  The only way is to allow the example shown us by Jesus to grow in us through His Holy Spirit through prayer, Bible study and obedience.  With time and practice we will gradually demand less for ourselves and be willing and ready for God to give more to others through us.
