Matthew 14:28.  Peter said to him, “Lord, if it is you, order me to come to you on the water.”

When we read about this event with Peter and Jesus (please read the entire event in your Bible), we tend to latch on to when Peter took his eyes off Jesus.  When he did that he began to sink.  He looked at the circumstances instead of keeping his eyes on Jesus.  But the event does not start with Peter sinking below his circumstances.  The event starts with Peter responding to Jesus’ indentation to come and Peter taking the first step of courage out of the boat.  Peter wanted to be with Jesus enough to be willing to step into unknown territory.  Our question is are we willing to step out into the unknown with Jesus or do we choose to remain in our familiar zones?  It may not be a physical change of location.  Maybe Jesus is calling us to learn to use a new gift from His Holy Spirit.  Maybe He is calling us into a different ministry.  We become so comfortable in our habits it becomes hard to step out and do something out of our norm.  Let us pray with Peter, “Lord, if it’s You, bid me to come.”  Then let us be sure to lift our leg over the boat, our comfort zone, and step into the new keeping our eyes on Jesus and our ears on His instructions.  He is calling but we must take that first step.
