Knowledge for All

1 Timothy 2:4. since he wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.

God wants all to be saved from sin and come into His knowledge of truth.  It is not limited to gender, race, culture,  economic level, social status, education, intelligence or anything else.  It is only limited to a saving knowledge through His Son, Jesus.  This knowledge is not gained for our own enrichment but for the enrichment of our relationship to God and to the rest of God’s family.  It is a knowledge to be shared in unity of love and acceptance.  Our worldly knowledge has taught us to be judgmental and selective. As we grow in God’s knowledge we will become less judgmental and more loving.  The question is are we willing to let go of our learned prejudices and allow God, through His Holy Spirit,to bring us into the unifying knowledge of His love and grace?

New Image of Knowledge

Colossians 3:10. and have been clothed with the new man that is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of the one who created it.

When we become children of God through Jesus, His Son we can be renewed into the image of God through His knowledge.  Up to then we only have the knowledge of this sinful world.  Gaining the knowledge of our Creator is a blessing and privilege.  Our problem is we are so infused with worldly knowledge which often is in opposition to God’s truthful knowledge.  We can’t gain this knowledge by infusion.  God has given us His Holy Spirit and His written instructions as a working tool for gaining His knowledge. Our question is are we willing to take the time nd effort to listen, read and learn?  As we grow older it is tempting to think the knowledge we have is sufficient.  Being reformed into the image of God from the image of sinful man begins with grace and continues by our own choice.  Let us not let one day pass without a desire, willingness and commitment to be renewed every morning and grow into the knowledge of God.

Knowledge of One

AColossians 2:2-3. My goal is that their hearts, having been knit together in love, may be encouraged, and that they may have all the riches that assurance brings in their understanding of the knowledge of the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

What is the goal of having knowledge?  It is to have the knowledge of the mystery of God.  This mystery is in Christ.  He was willing to leave His Father and humble Himself in the form of man to show us the mystery of God.  This mystery is a love we, in our sinful state cannot understand.  That makes our goal to learn to love.  God the Father, God the son (Jesus) and God the Holy Spirit are One.  It is their perfect love that makes them one.  This is really beyond our understanding but we can gradually gain knowledge of this love through the gift of the Holy Spirit as we learn to love God, ourselves and others.  Our question is are we willing to be less consumed with our own identities and learn to be knit together in love?

Knowledge Bearing Fruit

Colossians 1:10. so that you may live worthily of the Lord and please him in all respects – bearing fruit in every good deed, growing in the knowledge of God,

Pleasing God in all aspects of our lives.  What a high goal that is.  That means in our thoughts as well as our actions or inactions.  Where do we get the knowledge of what pleases God?  We get it through the Holy Spirit in prayer and meditation on the scriptures.  As we gain knowledge and insight the fruits will grow and bear more fruit and as they grow and bear more fruit our knowledge will grow.  Growing in knowledge takes action on our part.  Our question is will we choose to take the time and effort required?    Knowledge cannot grow by osmosis.  A fruit tree will die if left unattended.  Fruit must be picked to continue to bear more fruit.  Let us choose to ripen our fruit through prayer and meditation on God’s Word and actively use that fruit through our actions so the Holy Spirit can grow more fruit within us.

Knowledge in Unity

Ephesians 4:13. until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God – a mature person, attaining to the measure of Christs full stature.

The Church as we know it today is far from unity of faith.  We quibble about so many things.  Some play, ” if you don’t agree with me I’m taking my ball and playing somewhere else.”  We are more centered on our own desires and interpretations than we are on the unity of faith in the k owl edge of Jesus, the Son of God.  When asked about their belief or religion many name a specific denomination or church name rather than saying, “I’m a Christian, a follower of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.”  Christianity is not a religion, it is the way of life.  Religion is man trying to reach up to God through works.  Christianity is God reaching down to man with love, grace and forgiveness.  All we can do is accept and receive then allow Him to grow us in knowledge of Him.  Our question is are we willing to unite in God’s way of love and grace?

Surpasses Knowledge

Ephesians 3:19.  and thus to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.

We sinful beings cannot fully know the love of Christ.  We can only know the amount of love we are willing to receive.  We can know that His love for us far exceeds our knowledge.  Our goal is to be filled with all the fulness of God.  God is light, love, wisdom, holiness power and glory.  What a wonderful goal for us sinful beings to desire.  Our question is are we willing to continually give our hearts, minds and lives over to His Holy Spirit to shape and mold us into His Image?  As we grow in His image our knowledge will grow until that glorious morning when we awake in His very real presence and fullness.

Knowledge of Light

2 Corinthians 4:6. For God, who said “ Let light shine out of darkness,” is the one who shined in our hearts to give us the light of the glorious knowledge of God in the face of Christ.

I was in a new restaurant and went to the restroom.  While there the power went out.  It had no windows and no security light.  I couldn’t see me hand in front of my face.  I had no knowledge what was around me or where the door was.  We need light to gain knowledge.  Jesus, God’s Son, came to earth to bring light into the darkness of our sinful lives.  It is the light of His walk on this earth and the light of His spoken words that give us knowledge of God, His love and forgiveness.  Our question is do we want that knowledge?  With knowledge comes responsibility to use that knowledge.  Our sinful nature resists our giving up our selfish walk.  We must continually choose; choose to receive knowledge through The light of Jesus and walk in obedience or choose to go our own sinful way.

Knowledge With Love

1 Corinthians 13:2. And if I have prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith so that I can remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.

We ae told here knowledge isn’t the most important thing to seek.  Without love we are worth nothing.  God is love.  Without God in us through His Holy Spirit we have no love; we only have self-gratification and that only lasts for a little.  All we have and all we seek to have needs to be through love: our love for God, for others and for ourselves.  Knowledge should not be used to show others how smart, good or knowing we are.  Knowledge is given us by God to connect us with Him and lead others to Him.  Our question is what are we doing with the knowledge God has given us.  Our knowledge will grow related to our use of it.  Let’s practice using God’s gifts to us with wisdom and love

Rich in Knowledge

1 Corinthians 1:5-7. For you were made rich in every way in him, in all your speech and in every kind of knowledge – just as the testimony about Christ has been confirmed among you – so that you do not lack any spiritual gift as you wait for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Rich in speech and knowledge.  How beautiful.  The question is why don’t we see more of this richness?  We are too here that to be rich in speech and knowledge we must use the spiritual gifts God makes available to us when we receive His Son, Jesus, into our hearts, minds and lives.  Our problem is we stand back and admire the gifts but fail to open them.  Sometimes we open them but fail to use them.  After Easter, if God leads, I will write more on the gifts (many are in the archives of this blog) but I encourage you to do your own study on spiritual gifts: what they are, how to identify them and how to use them.  God did make us to be rich in speech and knowledge but we must do our part.

Depth of Knowledge

Romans 11:33-35. Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how fathomless his ways!   For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?  Or who has first given to God, that God needs to repay him?

This definitely reminds us who we are compared to Who God is.  There is no end to God’s knowledge and wisdom.  Since that is there should be no end to our quest and openness to receive His wisdom as we need it each day.  We cannot know His mind but He does know ours.  I’ve known people who think they know all they need to know.  There is never an end to our learning.  Each day is new and with it a new opportunity to know more of God and through that day’s gift of knowledge to reflect more of Hos image.  Our question is do we really want to be a reflection of the Image of God?  We must remember the knowledge that God is love so we must reflect love to all.
