2 Peter 1:5-7. For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith excellence, to excellence, knowledge; to knowledge, self- control; to self- control, perseverance; to perseverance, godliness; to godliness, brotherly affection; to brotherly affection, unselfish love.

We’re probably all familiar with the saying, use it or lose it.  This applies not only to our muscles bit to most everything.  I was fluent in German when I was little but had no place to use it so I lost a good bit of it.  Our brains need continual stimulation to learn new things and remember old things.  It is no different with faith and trust.  These go hand in hand.  As trust builds, faith grows.  As faith is exercised trust grows.  Life is full of opportunities for growth.  The book of James starts outwits how faith grows when experiencing the trials of life.  Why do not all grow in faith?  Read the verse again.  The Greek word for “excellence” is virtue or morality.  We must choose to live a life by the moral commands of God.  Knowledge comes from hearing and reading the Holy Bible.  Self-control is a choice.  It grows through a choice of perseverance.  Even though we may mess up we choose to keep trying.  All this will lead us to grow into a reflection of God’s love.  Our question is do we want to grow In faith that leads to growth in love enough to make the effort and perseverance necessary?  Gyms are full in January but empty as the year progresses.  Churches are full at Christmas but fade in numbers as the year progresses.  Let us choose to persevere in our growth, faith, love, obedience, worship and praise of our God.
