Drink the Cup

Matthew 26:27-28. And after taking the cup and giving thanks, he gave it to them, saying, ‚ÄúDrink from it, all of you, for this is my blood, the blood of the covenant, that is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

I don’t like grape juice.  I mean I really don’t like it.  It makes me suck in my lips and make a sour scowl.  When I partake of the communion cup I shiver with the bitter taste.  But it is a good thing.  It reminds me of the bitterness of the cross.  It makes more real what Jesus went through for me (and all of the human race).  When we do something with regularity we tend to do it without much thought.  When I drink from that  cup I am made aware of the distaste of the cross.  No human can really understand the cost Jesus paid for our sins.  We tend to make light of our sinful disobedience to God.  We hurry along to things that will not matter in eternity.  We give God only what time is left from our busy schedules.  Our question is, when we drink from the cup, will we be willing to really think on the bitter cost Jesus paid and really express our love and thankfulness that our only part is to drink from a cup rather than hang from a cross ourselves?
