Belong and Serve

Acts 27:23. For last night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve came to me

What a beautiful statement from the apostle, Paul. He stated he belonged to God and served God. In this world we are consumed with being “our own man.” We strive for independence and self-satisfaction. We regard life as being about “me, me, me.” We make vows to God and our churches saying we will support our churches with our prayers, our presence, our service and our giving, but don’t consistently follow through. We do just enough to be able to say we did. Jesus gave His all for us. We did nothing to deserve it. We can do nothing to earn it. Jesus did it out of obedience to the Father and love for us. Our question is how can we hold back? We either love Him enough to give Him our all or we choose to place ourselves first. To whom do we belong and who do we choose to serve?

Father’s Business

Luke 2:49 And he said unto them, How is it that all of you sought me? know all of you not that I must be about my Father’s business?

Jesus told us to follow Him. That means to follow His example of being about the Father,s business. Our question is what is our Father God’s business. Jesus showed us the Father,s business is about love, healing and forgiveness. We are to love all of God’s creation. We are to heal rather than cause harm and we are to forgive. We all fall far short of those three virtues. When we have a critical thought or say a harsh or critical word we are not acting I love and we are causing harm. When we refuse to give up a hurt we are not forgiving. We seem to enjoy evaluating others. This is the same as judging. We judge by our standards rather than God’s love. Jesus once said whoever is without sin cast the first stone. They all put down their stones and turned away. We must out down our criticism and judgemental thoughts and words and get on being about our Father’s business; love, heal and forgive.

Whom Do We Choose

A Stage

Matthew 15:8-9. This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me,
and they worship me in vain, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.

Psalms 19:14. May my words and my thoughts. be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my sheltering rock and my redeemer.

It’s evident since the first verse is true about us this second verse must not be true about us. Let’s be honest with ourselves. We have all spoken faith or obedience from time to time without really meaning our words or following through with them. How often have we quoted Matthew 6:33-34
“But above all pursue his kingdom and righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. So then, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Today has enough trouble of its own.” We say we pursue God’s kingdom and righteousness yet we go after the things of this world with more effort and enthusiasm. We know we need not worry about tomorrow, that it is in God’s hands yet we do worry. We forget our words of worry and our thoughts of more enthusiasm over worldly things rather than God’s kingdom and righteousness are displeasing to God. It seems we think we are on this earth to please ourselves and to try to please fellow-man rather than please God. Shakespeare once said, “Life is a stage.” Our question is what audience are we trying to please, God or sinful people? Let us play out our lives (thoughts included since God hears them) out for God.

Reverence and Adoration

Psalms 100:2. Worship the Lord with joy! Enter his presence with joyful singing!

Worship is defined as the feeling or expression of reverence or adoration. Reverence is defined as profound respect and esteem mingled with fear. Adoration is the act of paying honor to someone. Our question is are these attributes reflected in and through us when we gather with fellow believers to worship our God? Reverence is expressed quietly but adoration is expressed with joyful exuberance. We need a combination of both to fully worship our God. David was criticized by his wife for jumping and dancing with exuberance before the Ark of the Covenant but he was a man after God’s own heart. Will we hide our exuberance for fear of criticism from others or will God know us as children after His own heart? Let us be true worshipers.

With Reverence

Leviticus 26:2. You must keep my Sabbaths and reverence my sanctuary. I am the Lord.

As I first read this I thought about our attitude in our churches. As I prepared to write I heard a different aspect. Our bodied are a sanctuary for God to dwell through His Holy Spirit within us. Our question is do we treat our bodies, God’s sanctuary, with reverence? The word “reverence” means deep respect. Look around and perhaps in a mirror. So many of us abuse our bodies. We eat things and amounts that are harmful, drink harmful things, over work or under work our bodies. We all know if we’re honest. When we pray before we eat we should not only give thanks for our food but also ask for wisdom in what and how much to eat. Eating should not be a reflex but a thoughtful action for sustenance. As we should enter the sanctuary of our churches with reverence let us also treat God’s sanctuary of our bodies with reverence.

God Proves Hiself

1 Kings 18:36. When it was time for the evening offering, Elijah the prophet approached the altar and prayed:“O Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, prove today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command.

Elijah had the right to ask God to prove Himself because Elijah had followed all of God’s instructions. Elijah knew God’s instructions because he pent much time in prayer, including listening time. God is always ready to give us instructions but we need the habit of listening. When we receive instructions we must follow through in faith that through our obedience God will act. When we don’t follow through we will hear no more until we confess our lack and obey His instructions. Our question is if we have not recently seen God working through us when did we last hear and follow through in obedience and faith? Let us learn to walk with God daily as an obedient and faithful vessel for God to work through us.

Early in the Day

Exodus 16:21. So they gathered it each morning, each person according to what he could eat, and when the sun got hot, it would melt.

The Hebrews had to gather the manna early in the day. If they delayed the manna would melt. We also should gather our manna early in our day. If we don’t our manna will be dissolved by the day’s business. Our manna comes through reading and meditating on the written word of God, the Holy Bible. As the manna sustained the Hebrews, the Holy Bible is the staining power for our daily walk on this earth. Our question is are we eating our manna before we begin our business of the day? Even the reading of one verse on which we can meditate throughout our day will give us some sustaining power.

New Every Morning

Lamentations 3:22-23. The Lord s loyal kindness never ceases; his compassions never end.
They are fresh every morning; your faithfulness is abundant!

The Manna was fresh every morning. God’s kindness and compassion for each of us is also new every morning. Each night we confess our sins of the day to God we are forgiven. The morning comes with a clean slate. Our question is, after we confess our sins do we choose to carry that extra baggage the next day? What is behind is behind. Each day is new. Each morning God will fill us anew with His Holy Spirit, His love and His power. All we need do is ask each morning then accept and walk in God’s abundant faithfulness.

Gathering All We Need

Exodus 16:18. When they measured with an omer, the one who gathered much had nothing left over, and the one who gathered little lacked nothing; each one had gathered what he could eat.

Once again we read we must do our part. God designed us to be workers for Hm on this earth. We are His gatherers. God provides all we need for a full abundant life which includes working and giving as well as receiving. Just like the ax handle, we must reach out ourselves. God puts things in our reach. Our question is are we spiritually handicapped? So often we don’t see what God has for us or how He has equipped us. It may be because we have desired to remain as infants in His family and just watched others grow and work. If that is o we are loosing out on the abundant life God has for us. Let us pray, meditate and study God’s Manuel on living (the Holy Bible), meet with others and grow into spiritual adults in God’s family. Like the manna a god provided for the Hebrews to pick up and gather, let us pick up and gather all God has for us.
