2 Corinthians 5:21. God made the one who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that in him we would become the righteousness of God.

Jesus was and is righteous. God made Him to be sin for us so through Jesus we could be made righteous. We of ourselves are not righteous. We are sinners. Jesus knew no sin but in obedience to the Father and in love for us agreed to take on Himself what He never experienced so that we who are very experienced at sin could be counted as if we are righteous. Our question is do we make room for His righteousness in us by confessing our sins? Let us do what I call spiritual breathing; exhale sin through confession and inhale His righteousness.

John 15:26
26 When the Advocate comes, whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who goes out from the Father-he will testify about me,

We’ve seen the truth is God and the witness to the truth is Jesus. It is God’s Holy Spirit who continues to testify to the truth. The Holy Spirit reassures us of the truth (God) being in us. It is the thought of God that is the truth, the reality, of everything that is. When we remain in truth, remain in a God, all is well. Our question is how do we keep the truth in us? We keep, our minds fixed on God through the scriptures, prayer, meditation, worship and the mutual encouragement of the community of believers. Let us not only seek the truth (God), let us learn to reflect the truth and become one with the truth through the continual help,of the witness of God’s Holy Spirit.

The Witness

John 1:17
For the law was given through Moses, but a grace and truth came about through Jesus Christ.

We’ve already understood truth to be God for truth is reality and God is reality. God’s truth, the proof of His reality, came to us through Jesus. As Jesus, God’s Son, Who, as God’s Word and was with God from the beginning, walked this earth He witnessed to the Truth (the reality of God). John records this in chapter 8 verse 58 “Jesus said to them, “I tell you the solemn truth, before Abraham came into existence, I am!” In John 4:23 Jesus says, “But a time is coming and now is here when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such people to be his worshipers. It is His a Holy Spirit within us that enables us to worship Him in the truth of His very real existence. When we worship we must be fully present. We worship with our entire being, our minds, our bodies, our emotions and our spirit (God’s image reborn in us through Jesus). Our question is do we really worship? Think about the power of God that will flow through this earth when we really start to worship in spirit and in truth.

John 3:30. He must become more important while I become less important.”

The desire to be important is inbred in us. We want to be the one who knows, tells, gets praised, etc. it takes a loving, humble person to step back and let another be in the spotlight. John had crowds coming to him. He had many followers. When his followers became jealous over the amount of people following Jesus, John said it was time for Hume to step into the background and time for Jesus to be up front. It’s hard for us to share the spotlight let alone step out of it. We like to take credit for the good acts and ideas. We like to be the one God uses. We are “our” individual goal oriented rather than God’s goal through His collective body (all believers) oriented. Let us learn to enjoy contributing while recognizing God is really the One Who makes all things possible using all believers in the way He chooses and equips.

Deuteronomy 7:9. So realize that the Lord your God is the true God, the faithful God who keeps covenant faithfully with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations,

We use the word “true” in reference to factual. We mean that something us a fact. When God says He is truth He means much more than a fact. God is real. God encompasses all that is. Apart from God there is no reality. Nothing can alter or change the reality or truth of God. Facts as we know them can change with the change of time or circumstances. God never changes. His truth is eternal. God is eternal. The question is why does this definition matter to us? For us to be more than a fact that can change with time or circumstances we must be inside the truth of God; we must be one in Him. The only way we can do that is through His Son, Jesus. It is through believing in Him an emersing ourselves in Him. We emerge in reading and studying scripture, praying, meditation and sharing with others who desire to come into oneness with God and through Him, oneness with each other.

Sharing the Light

2 Corinthians 3:18. And we all, with unveiled faces reflecting the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another, which is from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

We’ve looked at veils before but there is so much in this one verse. We have been taught our spiritual side is private. We seldom ask others how their relationship with God is and seldom share ours. We talk guardedly putting a veil on our words and our true feelings. We don’t want to be considered as too “religious” or too “spiritual.” Our question is are we more concerned with what others think than what God desires? He wants us to openly reflect His love, light and glory. He is transforming us a little each day not for our own private joy but for His glory and for His shedding light through us into the darkness still in others around us. Let us not fear the judgements of others. Let us not hide the light reflected through us under veils. Let us go forth with loving boldness sharing the light and love of our a God.

All Else Fails

Matthew 18:2-4. He called a child, had him stand among them, and said, “I tell you the truth, unless you turn around and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven! Whoever then humbles himself like this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

There is a lot in these 3 verses. The first is faith and trust. When our son was in 1st grade he fell at school. The teacher called us to come take him to the doctor because she was sure his arm was broken. When she told our son she was going to call us he asked her to pray first. The teacher was a believer so she prayed. As she prayed she saw the large bump from the broken bone move and become almost flat. When the doctor saw the x-ray he was surprised. He said it should have been a compound fracture but was lined up perfectly and only needed a splint. Our son’s first reaction, his first thought, was to go to God. The adult teacher’s first thought was call on other people. We are to have the trust and faith as a child and take everything to God first. So often we look to our own abilities or those of others before we look to God. Like the saying, “If all else fails, read the manual,” we say if all else fails, pray. Let us be a child and pray, trusting God first.

Obedience in Love

1 John 2:5. But whoever obeys his word, truly in this person the love of God has been perfected. By this we know that we are in him.

Jesus is the prime example of obedience. As a child He obeyed His mother and step-father. As a man He obeyed God, His Father even up to and through a terrible and painful death. His obedience did not come from fear of retribution. It came out of His love for those He chose to obey. Our question is what is our reason for the times we obey and why do we ever choose to disobey? Do we obey the laws of the road to keep from a ticket or because we know they are for our safety and the safety of others? Do we obey the laws of God because we think obedience is the way to heaven? Obedience alone won’t give us eternal life in the Presence of God. Love of and through Jesus, God’s only Son, will lead us into the desire of obedience and into eternity in the Presence of God. It is not a question of what happens when we disobey as much as it is what we get when we obey out of love. Let’s ask God to enable us to love Him into the same kind of obedience Jesus demonstrated when He walked this earth.

Renewed Daily

2 Corinthians 4:16. Therefore we do not despair, but even if our physical body is wearing away, our inner person is being renewed day by day.

Sometimes I’m tempted to fall back on an older devotion I’ve written and posted. I find I can’t do that. Each and every day I am different from the day before, I am constantly changing; changing physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Some of these changes show more than others. We don’t usually notice our cells dying but some die every day. We can see loss through shed skin or hair in a comb or brush. Our minds can learn and/or forget things each day. Our emotions are forever changing. Our spirits are under the schooling of God’s Holy Spirit. We either grow closer to God and more into His image or we grow further apart and become less like His image. The choice is ours. For Him to be renewing His image in us each day we must be available and pliable. We have a part in the renewing. God has provided us with a text-book (the Holy Bible), a teacher (His Holy Spirit) and a class room (life experiences). We can continue to live in the past or move on in growth of newness each new day God gives us. Let’s keep moving on with God and growing into His image.

Love and Glory

1 John 5:14. And this is the confidence that we have before him: that whenever we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.

We can have confidence that what we ask God for will be accomplished. There is a condition on this. What we ask must be in line with God’s will. Our question is how do we know God’s will? We learn his will through studying the scriptures He has provided for us. When we study them we need the help of His Holy Spirit to give us the meaning they hold for our lives here and now. We know His highest purpose is love. When we ask for something is it in line with God’s love? His love is not self-indulgence. God’s love cost Him a His Son’s suffering for us. When we ask for something let’s be sure it is out of love and for the glory of a God.
