Matthew 6:13. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

God never leads into temptation. This is said in a rhetorical way asking God’s help in not being attracted to things that would tempt us. It is not God Who places us in the path of temptation. It is our choice. An alcoholic knows not to go into a bar. Satan will do all he can to deceive us and say we won’t fall into the temptation. We usually know when we choose to go our own way rather than God’s way. We ask God to deliver us from the evil one (Satan). We know we will fall and we ask God to pick us up when we do. Our question is are we willing to stay away from things that would tempt us? We often have the attitude, “just this once won’t really hurt.” One time leads to another. Our plans for recreation fall through on Saturday. It won’t be bad if we miss church this one Sunday. Before long missing church becomes acceptable to us. This poor line of reasoning applies to any area that might tempt us from being obedient to God. Let us choose to stay out of the tempter’s way with God’s help.
