John 14:27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

One of Satan’s counterfeit fruits is peace. The only real peace comes from God through His Holy Spirit. This peace calms our minds and hearts. This peace is untroubled. The peace of the world is very temporary and fragile. It can be broken by the slightest word or movement. The peace of God stands throughout any trial around it. Nothing and no one can take the peace of God away from a believer. The believer can step out from the peace through unconfessed sin or disbelief but can always return to the peace through confession and recommitment of belief. Let’s continually dwell in the peace of God.

Artificial Fruit

Mt 12:33 “Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit.

There are two trees in this world. There is the tree of the world and Satan and there is the Tree of Life, Jesus Christ. We are grafted into either one or the other. The tree of the world produces artificial fruit. It imitates all the fruit of God’s Holy Spirit but it is a false imitation. The fruit of love from the world’s tree is self-love. It’s fruit of patience or long-suffering is instant gratification. I’m sure you get the idea. We must be sure we stay grafted into the Tree of Life, Jesus Christ. When we see fruit we must check and be sure it is the real fruit, not the artificial. Satan and the world make the artificial fruit look good and enticing. It is ready for us to take in. The fruit of the Tree of Life takes work. It comes into us as a seed and it is up to us to be sure it is fertilized and watered (see yesterday’s devotion.) Let us be sure to stay grafted in the Tree of Life and not be fooled by the artificial fruit of the world.

Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, self control. There is a difference between thee fruits of the Spirit and the gifts of the Spirit.  The gifts are exactly that – gifts. They cannot be bought, earned or deserved. They are given us solely by the grace and choice of God. When we come into God’s family through His Son, Jesus Christ, we are implanted with the seeds of the fruit of His Holy Spirit. The seeds of these fruits must be fertilized, watered, pruned, grafted and used. They are grafted to the main vine, Jesus. They are fertilized through the written Word of God, the Holy Bible. They are watered by the Holy Spirit through prayer and worship. As we learn to flow in the fruits they grow and ripen. From time to time they need pruning. As we walk through the pruning trials we confess our sins and God cleans the weeds implanted through our sins. Let us be sure to take care of the fruits of God’s Spirit planted within us.

Why Church

1 Corinthians 12:28. And God has placed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, gifts of healing, helps, gifts of leadership, different kinds of tongues.

Our question is why do we have church? Jesus didn’t die just for a few selected people. He died for all the people of this world. We have the church as a group of believers who assemble together not for their own good but for the good of the world. As a church we are to encourage one another, build up one another and help one another to flow in the gifts given to each not for the purpose of a select group bit for the purpose of going out into the world making disciples for Jesus Christ. Yes, we must meet the needs of the church for its continuance but our primary purpose of coming together after worship and praise to God is to do the work He has for each of us out in the world. Let’s not be so bogged down with the needs of our local churches that we don’t have time or energy for our real mission Jesus left us as His departing words: (Matthew 28:19-20) “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

One Way

Acts 4:12. And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among people by which we must be saved.”

So many people believe if they live fairly good, moral lives or go to church or give to the poor or many other things they might do it means they will go to heaven. Many religions teach people must earn their way to heaven. God says there is only one way to heaven and that is belief in and following His Son, Jesus. There is nothing we can do or say to change this. We hear God is love and think it is unloving to have only one way to heaven. This thinking ignores Who God is. He created the universes and all within. It is His right to set the laws and orders. Who are we to debate that there should be many ways for different people and cultures? Let us be sure no one misses out because of misunderstanding. There is only one way to the one and only God. Don’t allow anyone you know to miss out on this free, loving gift of the Creator of all that was, is and is to come.

Ps 42:7 Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me.

When we went to Niagara Falls we went behind the falls and watched them flow in front of us. We could not hear anything but the sound of the falls as all the water rushed over the precipice. We were filled with wonder of the power of that water. Even though we were with a group of people we felt alone under the power of the water in front of us. We couldn’t risk getting in the water but we did get into the back spray. In our finite bodies we can’t feel the full power of God but we can be in the spray of His power. He sends His power into us through His Holy Spirit increasing it as we learn to flow in it using it for His glory. Our question is are we willing to let the spray of His Spirit’s power sweep over us or do we choose to back away, afraid of being swept away? Let us learn to allow the powerful water of God’s Holy Spirit to flow over us, empowering us to serve Him for His glory.

Our Worst

Corinthians 4:7. But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that the extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us.

So often we hear “give God your best.” That’ swell and good but it’ snot complete. We are to give God our best but we are also to give God our worst. When we give our best it is often confused with our natural abilities or training. When we give God our worst it is His power that shows and not our own abilities. God is glorified through this. I was known as a singer but I avoided speaking, even to announce the title of a song. God called me to speak. It is only through the power and gifting of His Holy Spirit that enables me to speak His word to others. No matter how often I speak I alway know and feel my inadequacy yet, because I have experienced His words flow through me I am able to speak in confidence and boldness; not in my abilities but in God’s power and grace. Our question is are we willing to allow a God to use us in areas and ways we have never experienced and feel uncomfortable or maybe even a little afraid? Let’s ask God to open our hearts and minds to allow Him to use us in any way He chooses. We are His treasure but for now contained in clay jars.

John 3:3. Jesus replied, “I tell you the solemn truth, unless a person is born from above, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

Today is my birthday. It is the day I celebrate my physical birth. There is a day with more reason to celebrate. It is the day I was re-born with the Spirit of God. When God created man He breathed His Spirit into the man He created. But man chose to be independent of God’s Spirit and committed the sin of disobedience. Man was separated from God until His Son, Jesus Christ, died on the cross for our sins and rose back to life. After He rejoined God, the father He released the Holy Spirit to dwell within each and every believer. The day I invited Him into me is the day to celebrate.

John 14:20. You will know at that time that I am in my Father and you are in me and I am in you.

I really love this verse. This is assurance from Jesus Christ, the Son of God. He said He is in me and I am in Him. This happened the moment I invited Him into me heart, mind and life, accepting Him not only as the Son of God. But also as my savior and redeemer from the sin that separates me from God. Because of Jesus and the blood He shed for my sins I can stand in the very presence of God. God will not be in the presence of sin. Sin can’t exist in His presence. This is why God had to withdraw from His Son as Jesus took on our sis on the cross. It is now my (and your) choice to experience the very real presence of Jesus in me through His Holy Spirit. I daily, and many times more than daily, confess my disobedient sins, accepting forgiveness making room within my heart, mind and life for His Holy Spirit to direct and guide me. How about you?

Know Love

1 John 3:16. We have come to know love by this:that Jesus laid down his life for us; thus we ought to lay down our lives for our fellow Christians.

The way we have come to know love (remember God is love) is through the sacrifice of Jesus Who shed His blood for us. There may come a time where we must physically give our physical bodies to death for others but this is not what John means in this verse. He means for us to be willing to put the needs of others before our needs; put the desires of others before our own desires. Through these kind of actions we can communicate the importance and worth not only to ourselves, but their importance and worth God has for them.. We are surrounded by people who have low self-worth. Let us lift the up and shoe them how much God loves them.
