Love Is More Than Words

1 John 3:18. Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue but in deed and truth.

This verse is not speaking to little children as we know them. It is speaking to adults acting like little children. We tend to say things that will bring us what we want. A little child will say “I love you” when they are caught doing something they shouldn’t, hoping their words of love will absolve them from punishment. We are so quick with our words of love like: “God bless you. I’ll pray for you.. I”m so glad you won all that money.” And so on. But do we really care or do we forget to pray for them nd re we jealous we didn’t win? We are usually careful to express the appropriate words of love and acceptance to a person without really following through. In fact, often we can be heard later complaining or criticizing that same person to someone else. How can we change this and truly love others with our words and tongue as well as in deed and truth? This is only possible through God’s gift of His Holy Spirit and comes through prayer. I have found the more I pray for individual people the more my love grows for them and the less critical and judgmental I become. Let us pray for those we have trouble loving and love them and ourselves into the love God has for us.
