On the Mountain

Matthew 28:16-20 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

The last documented appearance of Jesus after His death on the cross and before His ascension to heaven was on a mountain in Galilee. In spite of physically seeing and hearing Jesus some still doubted. It is amazing how hard it is for us to believe things we have never experienced or heard of before. We are not told which disciples were the doubters but let’s not judge them too harshly. They didn’t have the witness of the Holy Spirit. How many times have we doubted something God said to us even though we have the Holly Spirit? Jesus gives them what has come to be known as “the Great Commission.” Though He is speaking to the 11 disciples, He is also instructing all believers to follow this last instruction. He can give this instruction because God the Father has given Him all authority in heaven and in earth to instruct the believers. Our question is will we choose to believe He has the authority to tell us what to do? If so, will we do it? We’ll think about this the next day or two.
