Small and Dangerous

James 3:5-6. So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell.

With our tongue we can taste sweetness, bitterness and sour. It also makes us able to swallow. A doctor can look at it for signs of trouble in our bodies. When we use it to form words the ears of others can hear the words formed by the tongue to detect signs of trouble in our hearts. Sometimes the words we say aren’t meant to hurt but do because of timing, volume or expression coming with those words. What to do? We must learn to be fast to listen and slow to speak. We must give the Holy Spirit within us time to check or change what we say, how we say it and when we say it. With prayer and God we can tame our tongue to bring Him glory and honor.
