Freedom of Choice

Ezekiel 36:26. And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.

Since God gives us a new heart and a new spirit when we come to Him through His Son, Jesus Christ, why are we commanded to do and not do certain things and why is it so difficult to follow those commands? Through God’s grace we are given new hearts and spirits but we also have freedom of choice. We can choose to continue living with our old, sinful hearts and spirits or we can choose to learn how to live and function with the new hearts and spirits. The commands are there not to dictate but to show us how to function with the new, God-given hearts and spirits. Our question is what are we doing with our freedom of choice?
