John 20:31. but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

John began his letter with a statement of fact as to the identity of Jesus. As he comes to the end of his letter he gives the reason for his writing. Notice his use of the definite, singular article “the.” “The” refers to one. John is saying Jesus is the one and only God. There are no other gods. All other beings or things worshiped are idols, things created in sinful man’s mind to try to fulfill the God-given need to worship something bigger than himself. This need cannot be met without Jesus for He is the Word of God, the Creator of all that is, and through Him all was created. We are to worship the Creator and not the creation. Our question is where is our worship directed?
