Mountains and Valleys

Luke 4:1-2. And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry.

Jesus just experienced a spiritual high. He was baptized by His cousin, John, and as He came up out of the water a dove came down and the voice of His Father was heard saying, “this is Me Son.” Right after this high He experienced the wilderness and trials of temptation from the devil. This happens to us throughout our life’s journey. Everything is wonderful then, often without warning, things go bad. We want to stay on the mountain top with everything wonderful. Up on this mountain we tend to become lazy, prideful and take our good time for granted. We don’t really look to God. It is down in the dark valleys of trials and temptation that we reach up to God for direction. In these times we practice our faith and it can grow. Our growth is stunted if, instead of seeking God for direction, we grumble and complain. We can praise God that we don’t need to go through the valley’s Jesus walked and thank Him for being with us and helping us grow more one in Him as we exercise faith in the valleys we walk. May I suggest you close your devotional time today be reading the first chapter of James. May our valleys be a blessed time of growth.
