Genesis 2:16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden,

Genesis 25:34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew, and he ate and drank and rose and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright.

Adam and Eve turned their backs on their inheritance from God through disobedience. Esau also turned his back on his birthright for a moment of self-indulgence. Before we condemn them we must examine our own actions. We disobey God in thoughts and actions almost every day, multiple times. Each time we are not valuing our birthright, born through the shed blood of Jesus. As we continue to do this we become more callous to it. Before long we have walked away from God. How do we prevent this? The moment we are aware we have disrobed and given in to self-indulgence and self-gratification we are to confess our sins to God, ask for forgiveness and ask His Holy Spirit to empower us to resist the temptations next time they come. The more often we resist the stronger the resistance becomes. Temptations will always be there for us. Let us flex our spiritual muscles and become strong and wise. Let us keep our eyes on eternity with God rather than a moment’s gratification on this earth.
