The Christmas Story

Philippians 2:5-8 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

These verses summarize the Christmas story. Jesus, the Word of God, always a part of God, humbled Himself, emptied Himself of the Godhead and took on the form of a created human to show us how God designed us to live. This season of Advent, a time of preparing for the coming of the Christ, is a good time for us to empty ourselves of our own pride and self-seeking and ask God’s Holy Spirit to fill us with the attributes of Jesus through His Holy Spirit. Unlike Jesus, we have no right to be prideful or self-seeking, yet, unlike Jesus, we tend to hang on to these characteristics. When I first became aware of this need I felt I was like an onion. An onion is made of layers an as the layers are pulled off you eventually are left with nothing. Our layers are full of sin and we must choose to trust that when we get down to nothing we will be filled with the love and fruits of God and instead of smelling like an onion we will have a sweet aroma as we commune with our Father in heaven.
