Matthew 7:17 Neither is new wine put into old wineskins. If it is, the skins burst and the wine is spilled and the skins are destroyed. But new wine is put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved.”

Grapes were pressed them put into vats for a few days. Then they were put into clay jars if they were staying local or put into wine skins if they were going to travel. The fermentation process wasn’t finished. The fermenting gases would continue to expand. As they expanded the new goat wine skins would expand. Old wine skins were already expanded to their fullest so, if new wine was put into them the old skins would burst and the wine would be lost. When we make resolutions we make them in our old nature with our old habits. Our intentions are good but if we don’t change our old nature or habits the resolutions will fail. For a resolution to succeed we must have a new nature and put off the old habits to develop new habits. This is only possible through prayer and with the power of God’s Holy Spirit. A resolution made without prayer will fade. If we choose to make a resolution for the New Year let us pray first and seek God’s wisdom on what His Holy Spirit will help us change.
