First Words

Luke 2:.49 And he said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?”

These are the first recorded words of Jesus. These words were addressed to His mother and His step-father. They were not sarcastic words of an adolescent but words of surprise. Jesus was so focused on His Father, God, He couldn’t understand how His mother and step-father could be otherwise. He wanted to be back with His Father. He wanted to serve His Father. Yet Jesus submitted to the wisdom of His earthly parents and returned home with them to continue His preparation for the purpose of His coming. He came to show us how much God loves us and longs to fellowship with us. The only way the fellowship could be complete was for Jesus to live on this earth without sin and go to the cross to shed His blood for our sins. After He grew in the verse quoted yesterday He followed through with singular purpose to the end of His ministry. How about our ministry: We are called to fellowship with God our Father through His Son, Jesus. We are called to serve Him through obedience to His word. Are we single-minded and single purposed or do we vary back and forth between our own sinful desires and our desire to be with God and God in us?
