Obedience Over Understanding

John 2:7 Jesus said to them, Fill the water pots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.

Imagine the servants’ confusion at instructions to fill all the water pots for the weeding. Then they become even more confused when Jesus tells them to give a sample to the head steward. Yet, they did as Jesus instructed and filled the water pots to the top then gave a sample to the steward. There are a couple of options or they might have only put a little water in each one, they might have not done as Jesus bid (He wasn’t their master but a guest at the wedding), If they had only filled them a little there would only be a little wine. If they had ignored Jesus’ instructions there would be no wine. Often we don’t understand why the Holy Spirit moves us to do something. We can respond several ways. Because we don’t understand we refuse to do it. That’s okay because God can use someone else and they will be the ones who get the blessing of being obedient. Sometimes we only do it half-way or half-heartedly. When we do that we rob ourselves of the full blessing obedience to God. It takes faith to trust and obey but as the great hymn says, “Trust and obey for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.” If the inner voice of God’s Holy Spirit says to do something and it is in agreement with the written word of God, we don’t need to understand why, we need to obey.
