The Centrion

Matthew 17:54 When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!”

The centurion had others with him as they all watched Jesus die on the cross. The moment Jesus died the earth quaked. It took more than just the earthquake to convince the unbelievers that Jesus was truly the Son of God. It was also the way He died. He didn’t die by saying bitter words or threatening words. He died asking God to forgive the people. He said they didn’t understand what they were doing. His last words were, “It is finished.” He wasn’t so much referring to His human, physical life on this earth for He knew He would rise in 3 days. He was referring to His mission on this earth. He had come to show God’s love and to take on the penalty for mankind’s sins. He had done this. The rest is up to us. We must receive Jesus into our hearts, minds and lives as the Son of God, the Word of God, confess our sins and receive His forgiveness while also forgiving ourselves and others. We are to allow His Holy Spirit to live in and through us bring us all the fruits of the Spirit to grow in us. The question on this Friday is do we agree with the centurion? Are we sure He is the Son of God. Open up your heart and mind or those of someone else and take Him in today.
