Tree of Life

Genesis 2:17 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.” (NIV)

Genesis 3:22 22 And the Lord God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.” (NIV)

Have you noticed there is only one tree God told Adam he couldn’t eat from its fruit?  The tree of life was also in the garden but Adam wasn’t told not to eat of it.  As long as he was obedient and abstained from the knowledge of good and evil, therefore only being good as God created him, he was free to eat from the tree of life for he was in the image of God and had God’s life in him.  When Adam became disobedient, the knowledge of evil entered him, and therefor sin which separated him from the life in and of God.  God separated Adam, and all mankind, from the tree of life.  In time, God sent the tree of life, Jesus, His only Son, to this planet to give mankind the opportunity of eating of the tree of life.  We eat of it every time we partake of the elements of bread and wine which we call “the Lord’s Supper.”  But these elements only become the tree of life when we take them in the humility of a forgiven sinner desiring to walk in obedience to the Word, Jesus.  How wonderful God restored us to be able to eat from that tree of life and live eternally with Him.
