Matthew 2:11 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. (NIV)

Gold has been an international measure of wealth practically since the dawn of history, with each culture and era expressing gold weights and value according to their own custom.  It has never mattered what country or time you are in, gold is always accepted as a medium of exchange.  The gold the visitors brought would cover expenses that Joseph and Mary had until after they were able to return home and Joseph could return to his carpentry.  We don’t know how much of their individual wealth they were giving to the family but we do know they went to a lot of trouble to bring them their gift.  How much trouble are we willing to go to in order to bring our gifts to our Lord?
