Matthew 2:11 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. (NIV)

Frankincense is a milky white resin extracted from species of the genus Boswellia, which thrive in arid, cool areas of the Arabian Peninsula, East Africa and India. It’s a small tree which grows to a height of 16 feet. It has papery bark, sparse bunches of paired leaves, and flowers with white petals and a yellow or red center.  It had religious, medicinal and personal uses and was highly treasured.  When burned, the smoke was considered to be prayers rising up to heaven.  Our prayers are as the smoke of frankincense.  As we pray, are we aware that our words are as the smoke of frankincense rising up to heaven to the very ears of our God?  As frankincense was treasured, so does God treasure our prayers.
