Matthew 4:18-20 18 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 20 At once they left their nets and followed him (NIV)

Jesus starts to select His disciples.  The first two, Simon (Peter) and his brother Andrew are fishermen.  Have you ever wondered why the left immediately?  Jesus wasn’t new to them.  They had heard John the Baptizer preaching and they heard Jesus preaching.  The might have even been there when Jesus was baptized for John the Baptizer was the major attraction in the area.  They were probably also intrigued by Jesus saying they would be fishing for people.  I’m sure they didn’t understand what He meant by that.  When we fish, we use bait to catch the fish.  The bait Jesus used was God’s love through teaching, healing, forgiveness and miracles.  We must ask ourselves if we are fishing for people.  When they look or listen to us what do they see and hear?  God’s love or our judgement?   Are our words in line with God’s?  Does what we say promote healing?  Do we have a spirit of forgiveness?  Do we have the faith to pray for miracles?  Let us be true disciples and fish for people.
