Beatitudes

Matthew 5:1-2 1 Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them (NIV)

This is the first recorded teaching of Jesus.  In it He gives us 8 characteristics of thought and behavior we need to be blessed by God.  This is the beginning of His teaching us how to seek good and hate evil by following His word.  We call this “the Sermon on the Mount” or the “Beatitudes.”  We will be looking at one each day.  But to prepare ourselves, we must open our hearts and minds to a fresh look at each one.  We’ve read and heard them so much that we tend to pass them off as something we already know.  This attitude blocks us from learning deeper meaning from God as we grow in Him.  We need this attitude of not knowing already with all scripture we read so we can meditate afresh with an open and eager to learn mind and heart.  All scripture is like an onion.  It has multiple layers.  As we peal an onion it gets smaller and smaller with each layer removed.  Scripture has multiple layers.  As we perceive each layer our self-righteousness gets less and less and our understanding and intimacy with God becomes bigger and bigger.  IT is a daily renewing of our minds through our opening them to the wisdom and knowledge of the Holy Spirit.
