Poor in Spirit

Matthew 5:3 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (NIV)

To be “poor in spirit” means to be humble, not to think very highly of yourself.  It means to know you are needy.  Without being poor in spirit or humble one can see no need to depend on or look to God.  Those not humble are prideful and think they are all sufficient in themselves.  They either ignore the vacuum God placed inside them for His Holy Spirit or they try to fill it with themselves, other people or other things.  God blesses those who are humble and seek after Him for His love, wisdom and direction.  We must ask ourselves are we “poor in spirit?”  Do we recognize apart from God we are nothing?  Do we look to Him for all our needs and for all our directions in this life?  Let’s take time to reflect on what areas in our own lives where we are not humble and ask God’s Holy Spirit to come into those areas.
