Oaths

Matthew 5:33-37 33 “Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.’ 34 But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. 37 All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one (NIV)

How many times has someone asked us to pray for them and we said yes then we forgot?  Saying yes is the same as a promise and Jesus says we are not to break our promises.  I’ve learned, when someone asks me to pray for them, I do it with them right away.  Then, when or if I remember later, I pray for them again.  We are to be true to our yeses.  We are also to be true to our no’s.  How many times have we told God we wouldn’t do a certain thing anymore and then we do it?  We need to be careful with our no’s as well as our yeses.  It comes down to asking God before we say either yes or no.
