The Other Cheek

Matthew 5:39-40 39 But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also (NIV)

We’ve all been earing our politicians in a name calling contest.  It seems when one calls another a derogatory name the other will try to call a ore derogatory name and they go back and forth.  Jesus set the example for us when He kept His mouth shut in front of Pilot.  Trying to pay tit for tat doesn’t get us anywhere but deeper in the mire.  How do we keep from doing this to each other?  We must remember we are not perfect nor are we the only ones with the right answer.  We must remember that all of us are loved by God and we should choose to love one another.  But the attitude of wanting to get even with someone who’s hurt or offended us doesn’t start with the mouth.  It starts with our thoughts.  As soon as a negative thought enters our mind we are to ask God’s forgiveness and ask the Holy Spirit to help us replace that negative thought with one that will build up the other person rather than tear him down.  Saying something good and positive to someone who is angry or hurtful is like putting water a hot coal.  Let us learn to water hot tempers with the love of Jesus.
